 About Me

My name is Ava and I am a freshman at Linn-Benton Community College. I am currently enrolled in a transfer program with plans to go to a bigger school next year, to study Criminology. After I get my Bachelor's in Criminology I will either continue school to get a Master's degree, or start the career climb to becoming an Intelligence Analyst.

I'm excited to learn about how media effects the public eye, and society's view on certain issues.

Outside of school I enjoy fishing, camping, and crocheting. I'm currently planning a trip to kayak the Colorado River! It's a 16 mile trip, with a camping stop during the night!

 Information I Consume

My three main sources of information are The New York Times, TikTok, and CNN. Out of these sources, I recognize that TikTok is not a reliable source. However, it often brings something to my attention which I can then do further research into. The New York Times and CNN are both quite reliable, but do have political sways to the left. This can make it hard to get an unbiased reporting.

Given the amount of 'fake news' these days, I do my best to find reliable sources as mentioned above. Before passing on information I find my source to cite. I am often held accountable for this, when asked, "Where did you hear that?".

When asked the question, "What Obligation Do Social Media Platforms Have to the Greater Good?", I have conflicting feelings. To answer it objectively, I would say none. Social Media Platforms are technically just independent companies, who have no obligation to society. If I were to answer it from the perspective of someone who uses social media all the time I would say that, yes they do have obligation. Social media constantly shares information, often without it being fact-checked at all. I believe social media platforms have an obligation to keep people safe, and stop the spread of misinformation and crime on their platforms.
